  • Australian national laws protect koalas, but each individual state is responsible for the animal's conservation. The Federal Government passes responsibility to the states and they in turn pass accountability to local government. As a result the four states that have koalas living in the wild each have their own koala legislation. The national issue is an urgent matter and requires the attention of the Federal Minister for Environment, Senator Ian Campbell. The Minister is being asked to ‘act now’ and list the koala as nationally ‘vulnerable’ under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
